INVISTA’s PERFORMA™ provides a high-gloss protective display for authentic Titanic coal
INVISTA’s PERFORMA™ film and sheet is being used to encase coal from the Titanic, which is now available to the general public for purchase.
Spartanburg, S.C. (December 3, 2009) – INVISTA’s PERFORMA™ film and sheet is being used to encase coal from the Titanic, which is now available to the general public for purchase. The clear APET sheet creates a durable package that, when combined with the glossy paperboard mounting base embellished with metallic ink, resembles a miniature version of the display cases used in museums and galleries.
“It is a treat to work on a project like this because people cannot help getting intrigued,” said Clarissa Schroeder, business manager of the PERFORMA™ film and sheet division. “Our customers impress us with inventive uses for PET, but to house a piece of the Titanic? This is a first.”
The coal is owned by the corporation responsible for salvaging the ship, RMS Titanic Inc., and, according to RMS Titanic Inc., is the only authentic Titanic artifact available for purchase. RMS Titanic, Inc. works with Premier Exhibitions to display the extensive collection of Titanic artifacts currently touring North America.
PERFORMA™ film and sheet is known for clarity, consistency, and easy processing. It is manufactured using INVISTA’s PET resin. Development and production of packaging for the coal is managed by Integrated Development LLC, who mounts the coal on-site at their packaging facility. “I knew INVISTA to be a supplier of PET resin from seeing them at a tradeshow,” said Henry Wischusen, director at Integrated Development LLC. “The APET sheet has worked so well – great die cuts, crisp fold lines, and great clarity.”
The coal is currently available at exhibits in Las Vegas, New York, Saint Paul, Rochester and Louisville. The exhibit will also will be coming to Puerto Rico soon.
